Victory Wings

Catherine Conrad

“Victory Wings” is centered on a pecan wood slab that can
be viewed in either direction. Both sides of the slab include painted and drawn
components (oil, colored pencil, and encaustic wax). There are added mixed
media features that include wires and vines. On the wings themselves, there is
string, fabric, paper, and tape.

“Victory Wings” is based on my own personal journey – but
one that I believe is universal. In my youth, I had a clear idea about where my
life path would lead me. However, through the arduous process of living, I have
landed in another place that was unexpected. However, I feel a strong sense of
the victory of accomplishment. Even though the wings of the sculpture are
broken and a bit rusted – and the sculpture is based on a dead, felled tree –
there is dynamic beauty in its transformation. C’est la vie.
